Description

Jim Yellowhawk, an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, has experimented with innovative media, such as neon light, mixed-media air brush, bark paper collage and even painting on umbrellas.

Yellowhawk portrays subjects of traditional symbols such as the eagle, the buffalo and the circle - for which he has strong beliefs. Many of his compositions are circular and evocative of star legends in night sky scenes, such as his work titled Star World.

Yellowhawk's versatility has left an exhausting trail of recognition. His works have appeared as posters promoting events, such as the poster for the 1997 10th annual Black Hills Pow Wow and Art Expo in Rapid City titled Intertribal! Everybody Dance.

His artwork is represented in the collections of the Sinte Gleska University in Rosebud, South Dakota, the Akta Lakota Museum in Chamberlain, South Dakota and the Indian Arts and Crafts Board's Sioux Indian Museum.

Yellowhawk shows his work at the annual Red Cloud Indian Art Show in Pine Ridge, South Dakota and at the U.S. Geological Survey's Indian Heritage Celebration in Reston, Virginia which is co-sponsored by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Yellowhawk's works have been published by Tipi Press in Chamberlain, South Dakota; Antioch Publishing Inc. in Yellow Springs, Ohio and Indigena Fine Arts Ltd., Tucson, Arizona. His art and designs have also been selected for use on apparel and on numerous compact discs, book covers and cassette recording covers, including one for the rock band Steppenwolf.

Yellowhawk was born June 5, 1958 in Rapid City, South Dakota. He attended schools in Pierre and Eagle Butte, South Dakota and Marion College in Marion, Indiana where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in art in 1981. Next to artwork, he enjoys traditional dancing, traveling, riding his motorcycle and being with his family.
